Leonardo DiCaprio has seemingly never dated a woman aged 26 or older — and, at the age of 47, it seems he doesn’t intend to start now.
The actor has reportedly broken up with his long-term girlfriend, model and actress Camila Morrone, just months after she turned 25.
The couple had been together since 2018, when Morrone was 20 years old, but when she approached her 25th birthday in June, netizens joked that their relationship was doomed.
A graph that demonstates the ages of DiCaprio’s previous girlfriends has been circulating on social media for a number of years, and it looks set to get an update.
The graph suggests that DiCaprio’s oldest girlfriends have been 25 years old or younger. Aside from Morrone, he dated Bar Refaeli until 2010, the year she turned 25. The actor also briefly dated Kelly Rohrbach in 2015, the year she turned 25, and he dated Nina Agdal from 2016 until 2017 — also the year she celebrated her 25th birthday.
His other public relationships all took place when the women were in their early 20s — specifically between the ages of 20 and 24, including his famous relationship with Gisele Bündchen, which lasted from 1999 and 2005.
Fans caught on to this pattern and have long held a theory that he ends his relationships before his girlfriend turns 26.
For example, last year, TikTok user @NatSingsSongs wrote a song about being in her “final Leo year”, before turning 26, that amassed 3.5 million views on TikTok.
Now that the inevitable has happened, Twitter user @erinbrockobic joked that the only three things that are certain in life are death, taxes, and “Leonardo DiCaprio breaking up with his girlfriend before her pre-frontal cortex has fully developed,” — social media users are having a field day with jokes.
Sarah Lazarus said: “Maybe Leonardo DiCaprio hated 9/11 so much that he can’t even date women who remember it. Did that even occur to you.”
Tom Neenan said: “Titanic turns 25 this year, at which point I assume Leonardo DiCaprio will no longer want to be in it.”
Rachael said: “Leonardo DiCaprio every time one of his girlfriends turn 25.”
Another Twitter user said: “Leonardo DiCaprio calling Camilla Morrone on her birthday when she turned 25.”
Sally Dar said: “Maybe Leonardo DiCaprio feels bad for all the women who can’t rent a car until they are 25 and is actually a really good guy. Did that ever occur to you.”
As yet another relationship has fallen victim to the 25th-birthday curse, we take a look at Leo’s past relatioships.
The early years
Speculation over Leonardo DiCaprio’s romantic life began in earnest more than 20 years ago, when he first rose to international fame in the 1990s. His first high-profile girlfriend was rumored to be Brittany Daniel, who you might remember from Sweet Valley High fame. After starring together in The Basketball Diaries (1995) the two were said to have linked up in real life. DiCaprio then went out with model and actress Kristen Zang for two years, sometimes referred to as the original “one who got away”, as she dumped him for being too immature. Hmm…
Into the late 1990s and early noughties, DiCaprio dated a line-up of high-profile models, including Amber Valletta (who he reportedly sought out after spotting her in a magazine – if only all set-ups could be that easy), Eva Herzigova (who later described DiCaprio as a “wonderful person”) and, most famously, Gisele Bündchen, who he went out with for five years, until she was 23 years old.
The couple’s split was said to be amicable, with conflicting schedules and divergent careers to blame. “Six months of being on location or being off in Morocco or someplace like that is not the best thing for a relationship. A lot of your life is put on hold when you make movies. Everything, whether personal relationships or friendships, is put on ice when you go on location for five or six months, away from everybody,” DiCaprio would tell Esquire.
In her book Lessons: My Path to a Meaningful Life, Bundchen later reflected on her relationship with DiCaprio. “Everyone who crosses our path is a teacher, they come into our lives to show us something about ourselves,” she wrote, “and I think that’s what he was. What is good versus bad. I honour him for what he was.”
After Gisele, DiCaprio entered another long-term relationship, with Victoria’s Secret model Bar Rafaeli. He would date the Israeli model on and off from 2005 to 2011. However, he broke things off with her when she was – you guessed it – 25.
Blake Lively (and more models)
Who could forget DiCaprio’s romance with Blake Lively? While it only lasted five months, the two dated in 2011 during the peak of Lively’s Gossip Girl fame and enjoyed vacations together to Disneyland and Italy.
Next up, there was a run of models: DiCaprio dated Madalina Ghenea, Erin Heatherton, Toni Garrn, and Sports Illustrated star Kelly Rohrbach, who he was spotted wheeling around town with on a Citi Bike (he is, after all, an eco-warrior).
Then, there was the flirtation with Rihanna at a Paris nightclub, though their rumoured fling was (sadly) never confirmed.
DiCaprio had a steady girlfriend in Camila Morrone. He had been with the model turned actress for nearly five years, as they were first said to be dating at the end of 2017.
And 25-year-old Morrone is no stranger to Hollywood. Her stepfather is Al Pacino and DiCaprio appeared to have received the actor’s blessing, as Leo and Camilla had been spotted out on double dates with the Godfather actor, 82, and Camila’s mother, Lucia Sola, who at 46 is a year younger than Mr DiCaprio.
Morrone even stood up for her relationship with DiCaprio on Instagram. After she posted a photo of Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart, she received some hateful comments and turned to her Instagram stories to brush off said hate. In a video, she said, “Good morning people and happy Friday. I just read some of the comments on my Instagram and… my God, people are so mean and full of anger with people that they know nothing about. I guess I just hope on this Friday that people learn to live with a little less hatred and place their time and interests elsewhere because living without hatred feels pretty good.”
However, they reportedly broke up in August 2022, following Morrone’s 25th birthday in June. However, I doubt she’s crying into her Ben and Jerry’s, as she is about to grace our screens as the lead in Daisy Jones & The Six, a new series on Amazon Prime Video.
