GB News star Emily Carver is just one of a number of outraged voices condemning a UK cinema chain for cancelling the premiere of an upcoming free speech documentary.

Think Before You Post is an upcoming feature-length documentary from the team at Spiked. The film delves into the “rise of British speech police” and the threats against free speech in the UK.

The premiere for the feature was set to take place at Rich Mix on November 25, but Spiked informed its fans that the cinema had decided against hosting the event.

According to Spiked, the cinema took the decision after it “came to light that the content and speakers featured do not align with our values and mission” of the establishment.

In a social media post by Spiked, it claims that Rich Mix representatives said in an email: “‘Our founding objectives are to support marginalised communities (primarily communities facing racial inequity), promote intercultural understanding, eliminate racial discrimination, and foster equality of opportunity through arts and culture’.”

Hitting out at the decision, a post on Spiked’s X page said: “I wish I could say I was surprised. The cultural sector is overrun with woke scolds who wouldn’t know what free speech is if it bit them on the backside.

“The gentleman who emailed us about the cancellation naturally had his pronouns in his email signature, too.

“This isn’t even the first time our documentary about censorship has been censored. On X, it has been slapped with age restrictions, despite having no age-inappropriate content in it, thanks to the illiberal Online Safety Act.

“I suppose we should be happy to have been proven right. But vindication is cold comfort when it comes at the cost of a great evening of screening the film and discussing it with our contributors, friends and – most importantly – supporters.”

Spiked has also informed its fans and those who’d purchased tickets that rearrangements would be made in due course.

GB News has contacted Rich Mix for comment on Spiked’s statement and the decision.

Inevitably, the news of Think Before You Post’s premiere cancellation was met with fury by several familiar faces, several of whom were quick to point out the irony of a documentary about free speech being cancelled.

Ridiculous! The Rich Mix cinema cancels a film on free speech, presumably because one or two people got their knickers in a twist over the prospect of hearing something they don’t like.

Kinda demonstrates why the documentary is needed, doesn’t it… https://t.co/sOPvznbHyg

GB News favourite Emily made her thoughts on the cancellation clear: “Ridiculous! The Rich Mix cinema cancels a film on free speech, presumably because one or two people got their knickers in a twist over the prospect of hearing something they don’t like. Kinda demonstrates why the documentary is needed, doesn’t it…”

Fellow People’s Channel regular Andrew Doyle also weighed in: “Cancelling the screening of a documentary about the importance of free speech is a terrible decision for an arts venue.

“If a commitment to free speech isn’t a priority for @RichMixLondon, creatives would be well advised to steer clear.”

Elsewhere, author Helen Joyce weighed in: “The Thought Police really don’t do irony, do they? Shutting down a documentary on how free speech is being shut down… It’s Orwell crossed with Mr Bean.”

Comedy writer Graham Linehan was also among those opposed to the cinema’s decision

Musicians Right Said Fred were also amongst the critics: “An extraordinary decision by @RichMixLondon They’ve cancelled a documentary about free-speech. The rot is deep.”

“This is insane,” comedy writer Graham Linehan echoed, while author Jake Wallis Simons also commented: “A film about cancellation has been cancelled. You couldn’t make it up!”

The team at Spiked are determined not to let Rich Mix’s decision stop them from delivering their documentary to the public, however.

In the publication’s article about the news, Editor Tom Slater defiantly said: “In any case, we are determined not to be silenced.

GB News regular Andrew Doyle also criticised the cancellation

“Clearly, the core message of Think Before You Post – for free speech and against censorship – is more important than ever. Even if it doesn’t jive with the sacred ‘values’ of Rich Mix.”
