The actor began by admitting, ‘This is a movie I’m absolutely the proudest of in my career,’ which covers a four-year span between 1961 and 1965.
The first year is when Dylan moved from his home state of Minnesota to New York City, and 1965 was his controversial performance at the Newport Folk Festival where he used an electric guitar for the first time.
Colbert mentioned that the film not only charted Dylan’s career between those years, but also shined a light on America as a country at that time.
‘It’s as much of a movie about Bob Dylan’s early life from 1961 to 1965, as it is about the United States at this time, Greenwich village at that time, a sort of fraught political environment,’ Timothee said.
The actor admitted he was ‘not very educated’ about Dylan’s work when he first signed on, but when he first started looking up his music, he first found some of his press conferences from 1965.
‘I got approached with the material and there were these press conferences is that popped up from 1965 where he so confrontational in his media appearances and he is so elusive and mysterious,’ the Dune star said.
He then charted the arduous journey this film took to arrive in theaters in a few short weeks, more than five years in the making.
‘It was supposed to be the summer of 2019 we were supposed to shoot it. Excuse me. Summer of 2020 we were supposed to shoot it, and the pandemic happened,’ e added.

While both he and director James Mangold moved on to other projects, he kept working on Dylan, as they even showed a video of him performing a Dylan song on the set of the first Dune movie.
‘We were supposed to do it in 2023 and the actors strike happened. I started to think, is there a hex on this project? Then we did at the following summer, last summer. It was a relief. I felt like I was getting some thing off my plate,’ he admitted.
The actor also admitted that the recorded all the music live to camera, which is quite rare in films of this ilk, but the American-French hunk admitted it ‘clicked’ something inside him.
‘The worst thing we could have done with a Bob Dylan biopic is sanitized that make it sound clean. This was a man from iron ore country. Minneapolis, Minnesota. Hibbing, Duluth. You hear it in his voice. I didn’t want to be a new Yorker recording in Los Angeles decimating that music,’ he said.
The actor went on saying: ‘This is like an American hero, an American great. One of the fantastic artist of our time. This movie is a humble bridge, it’s a gateway to hopefully anybody who’s not a fan to discover it.’
When asked if he was going to be playing Must Be Santa over the holidays, Timothee teased, ‘I’ve got a little Must Be Santa surprise up my sleeve.’
