Sir Ed Davey is at risk of facing a Liberal Democrat civil war after a frontbench MP resigned in a bid to topple the party leader.
Witney MP Charlie Maynard quit as a Treasury spokesman earlier today and is now asking Liberal Democrat MPs to back him in a no-confidence motion against Sir Ed.
Mr Maynard, who won Lord Cameron’s former seat by 4,339 votes, rose to prominence following his campaign against Thames Water.
There has been growing frustration with Sir Ed’s leadership amid fears the Liberal Democrats have gone backwards since the last general election.
However, Liberal Democrat deputy leader Daisy Cooper told The Financial Times that the “vast majority” of MPs were “furious at this distraction”.
She added: “We Liberal Democrats are the last line of defence against a Reform UK Government and Ed is determined to lead a strong and united party into the next general election.”
