Eamonn Holmes has opened up on becoming more “conscious” of his diet in recent years, admitting he is “getting older”.

Discussing his lifestyle on GB News, the Breakfast anchor admitted to considering eating “less meat” due to his “fondness” of the animals.

Broadcaster Christopher Biggins admitted to his own struggles with getting older and eating meat, telling Eamonn: “I do like a sausage, but I have gone off meat per se, funnily enough.

“As I’m getting older, I think it takes a lot of eating a piece of meat, if you pardon the expression.”

Agreeing with Biggins, Eamonn added: “And the older you get, the more you find that it takes a lot of effort.”

Admitting to his own personal changes in diet, Eamonn revealed to the GB News panel: “I must admit, I have more of a conscience about eating meat as I get older.

“And that’s because of a fondness of animals. If you ever go on Instagram and you look at cows and horses and pigs, they’re so affectionate and incredible.”

Biggins supported Eamonn’s admission, agreeing: “They are wonderful and gorgeous animals, and there we are putting them into our mouths and eating it.”

Discussing her vegetarian lifestyle, broadcaster Dawn Neesom said that a lot of vegetarian ready meals are “processed” and got “a lot of salt and sugar” in them.

Neesom told the panel: “I don’t eat meat, the husband eats meat, and it’s not an issue. But also, a lot of vegetarian meals are certainly processed.

“They’ve got a load of salt and fat and sugar in them, so they’re actually worse for you than eating a lean bit of meat.”

Responding to Neesom, Eamonn called for all processed microwave meals to be “banned” entirely.

Eamonn fumed: “Unfortunately processed food in general, microwave meals, should just all be banned, they’re just poisonous foods, they’re absolutely ghastly.

“And we take them on the basis that ‘this has got low calories, this should be good for me’. And we are sold a lie that we think it’s great for us. Instead it’s poisonous.”

Highlighting the “most recent trend” for food among the young generation, cohost Miriam Cates claimed that it will be “very difficult” to get young men to be vegetarian, as they are increasingly wanting a “high protein” diet.

She explained: “I think the tide is turning now because the new trend amongst young people, particularly young men, is protein.

“Chicken breasts, tuna, that’s the new trend, to get as much protein in them as possible. That’s very difficult to do if you’re vegetarian.”
