Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, enthusiastically cheered on her niece, Zara Tindall, as she competed at the Cornbury House Horse Trials in Oxfordshire.

The 60-year-old wife of Prince Edward took time out of her busy schedule, which saw her meet with King Charles moments before the monarch’s reunion with Prince Harry earlier this week.

Sophie’s appearance at Cornbury House came shortly after returning from official duties in Canada.

Her five-day trip to Alberta saw he attend the Spruce Meadows Masters Tournament and carry out engagements focused on British-Canadian links and charity work.

Just 24 hours after returning from North America, she met with King Charles at Clarence House for talks just as Prince Harry was about to set down for “a private tea” with his father.

The Duchess was photographed leaving the royal residence in London on Wednesday shortly before the Duke of Sussex arrived.

While cheering on Zara, Sophie wore sophisticated neutral tones for the occasion, pairing a patterned grey jacket with a crisp white shirt neatly tucked into a flowing navy skirt.

She also perched a pair of sunglasses on her head, anticipating the sun interrupting her view of the events.

Zara, a former Olympic equestrian, participated in the competition, which began on Wednesday and continued through to Sunday.

The 44-year-old daughter of Princess Anne navigated the Oxfordshire course, clad in professional riding gear featuring white jodhpurs, a navy jacket and black boots.

Following her competitive rounds, Zara changed into a beige pullover that complemented her nude-toned nail polish, styling her blonde hair in a practical ponytail with minimal makeup.

She later slipped into slim-fit dark denim paired with fashionable wellington boots and an olive-green coat.

Prepared for unpredictable weather conditions, the 44-year-old equipped herself with both an umbrella and a fedora hat.

The Cornbury House Horse Trials present themselves as an “eventing experience set amongst the beautiful woodland of the Cotswolds’ most prestigious estate”.

Organisers describe it as: “The ideal setting to see some of the finest young horses and riders in the country competing in dressage, cross country and show jumping”.

In August, Zara also competed in Gloucestershire’s Hartpury International Horse Trials.

While Sophie did not attend, the 44-year-old could rely on her daughter Mia’s emphatic support during the evening.

Mia, 11, was seen closely monitoring the technical aspects of the performances, sharing in her mother’s and grandmother’s passion for sporting in the saddle.

The family’s equestrian heritage spans generations, with Zara’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, maintaining a renowned connection to horse racing throughout her life.

Princess Anne became the first British royal to compete at the Olympics, participating in the three-day eventing at Montreal 1976, where she rode the Queen’s horse Goodwill.
