Motorists are facing long delays on the M6 in Lancashire this morning following an overturned lorry and fuel spillage.

The M6 in Lancashire is closed this morning in the northbound direction between Junction 34 (near Halton, Lancaster) and Junction 35 (Carnforth).

National Highways: North-West stated that an overturned lorry has caused a “large fuel spill”.

Lancashire Road Police and Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service are attending the scene, while National Highways Traffic Officers are assisting with traffic management.

Drivers are being warned of long delays along the motorway this morning

NATIONAL HIGHWAYS

As a result of the road issues, National Highways has also taken the decision to close the third lane of the southbound carriageway.

Motorists are facing road chaos on one of the first days after the summer holidays, with parents driving their children to school.

Further chaos is expected as the M6 is also closed northbound for planned works between Junction 36 and Junction 39.

National Highways has outlined a diversion route for motorists

NATIONAL HIGHWAYS

National Highways traffic maps indicate that there could be delays on the M6 until at least 1pm, although this may be extended further.

Normal traffic conditions are also not expected to return until around 1pm on the M6 northbound entry slip at Junction 34.

GB News has contacted the emergency services for a comment.

Road users are advised to follow the Solid Circle diversion symbol on road signs

  • Exit the M6 J34 at the traffic signals before turning left onto the A683
  • Follow the A683 through Caton, Claughton, Hornby, Melling, Tunstall and Nether Burrow
  • At the junction with the A65, turn left towards Kirkby Lonsdale
  • Proceed along the A65 past Kirkby Lonsdale through the village of Lupton

The incident comes alongside a planned closure of the M6 between J36 and J39
