Chrissy Teigen has sparked controversy after wearing a Chelsea shirt to an Arsenal versus Ipswich Town match, leading to a heated exchange with football fans on social media.
The model and television personality, 39, attended Friday’s game at the Emirates Stadium alongside her husband John Legend and their children.
The couple’s appearance drew criticism after Teigen appeared to confuse Ipswich Town with Chelsea during a post-match interview with Prime Video Sport.
Adding to the confusion, Teigen paired her Chelsea shirt with an Ipswich Town half-and-half scarf whilst watching Arsenal’s 1-0 victory.
The match marked the couple’s first-ever Premier League game, with Legend, 45, explaining they were visiting London for the holidays.
Following the backlash, Teigen took to Instagram to mock her critics, sarcastically declaring herself “the world’s biggest soccer fan”.
Teigen appeared to mix up her team loyalties, combining her Chelsea shirt with an Ipswich Town and Arsenal half-and-half scarf
In a series of videos posted to her Instagram Stories, she fumed: “You know who the biggest ‘k***s and t**ts’ are? The people who don’t like soccer as much as I do”.
The model then shared a throwback photo of herself wearing a football kit, captioning it: “Does this look like the face of someone who doesn’t know soccer?”
Lying in bed, she addressed her followers directly: “I’m currently getting roasted for being the world’s biggest soccer fan. Everybody’s jealous because I’m the biggest fan and they’re not”.
She added: “They’re jealous that they’ll never be as big a fan as me”.
Teigen documented her first visit to a football game in England
During their post-match interview with Prime Video Sport, Teigen’s confusion became apparent when asked about supporting Chelsea.
“Listen, I love an underdog, and I love coming in and being surprised by how much a team can do,” she said. “When you said Chelsea, I was like, is Chelsea Ipswich? I don’t know.”
Legend admitted their limited knowledge of the league, saying: “This is our first Premier League game ever, and we’re here for the holidays. My friends were like, well, Arsenal is going to win by like, you know, six goals”.
The singer added that while they attend LA football matches “every once in a while”, England is “where the real football has been played”.
“We feel spoiled to get to be here, especially as people that don’t understand the game and the nuances as much as anybody else,” Teigen concluded.
During the match, Teigen shared her thoughts on improving football, suggesting on Instagram that “soccer needs more goals” and that “the main goals should be higher in the air”.
Teigen appeared to be trolling fans with her suggestions to improve football
Her comments drew immediate criticism from football fans, who branded the couple “clueless” on social media platform X.
One fan questioned: “Chrissy Teigen confusing Ipswich for Chelsea. Why are they even there?”
“John legend, Chrissy Teigen on @primevideosport have no f*****g clue about football…yet u give them air time,” another fumed.
A third slammed: “That John Legend interview was an absolute mess… here I am lifelong die-hard supporter who didn’t get successful with the ballot for the game”.
“Well then Prime Video Sport when you have the choice between interviewing John Legend or Ed Sheeran, next time pick the one that knew which teams were playing! What a car crash,” a fourth shared. (sic)
