Reece James is set to have a scan on his injured hamstring next week to determine how long Chelsea’s captain will be sidelined.
Head coach Enzo Maresca had said he hoped it would only be a ‘small’ problem. The club will need to wait to discover the extent of the damage as they hope it is indeed only minor, given James’s hellish injury history.
James will miss Chelsea’s trip to Leicester on Saturday.
The 24-year-old had missed the start of the Premier League season through suspension before suffering a hamstring injury.
James has now sustained another hamstring issue and is set for another spell on the sidelines.
On Thursday James wrote on Instagram that he is determined to overcome his latest setback.
Chelsea are facing an anxious wait to see how long Reece James will be out for through injury
Enzo Maresca confirmed James will miss the game against Leicester with a hamstring problem
James wrote a defiant message on Instagram following news of his latest setback
He wrote: ‘This message is to the people that understand & have respect for what I’m going through… I appreciate you so much, your support and kind words go further than you could ever imagine.
‘And just to touch on me… I’m doing okay, been better and also been worse. Another challenge ahead accepted. Eventually I’ll come out on top. Against all odds.’
Commenting on James’ injury, Maresca said: ‘He felt something.
‘He has to be out, for sure this weekend, and then we’ll see. At the moment we don’t know how long. We’ll see.
‘I know it’s not easy, but if every time he is getting an injury it becomes hard for him, for me it’s even worse. He has to accept that. He has to try to avoid it as much as he can.
‘But sometimes things happen, even if you want to avoid them. This weekend he’s not available. Unfortunately he felt something small. It’s a hamstring. It’s a muscle problem. We don’t want to take any risks for this weekend.’
Last season James was restricted to just 10 Premier League appearances, having only featured 16 times in the league in the previous campaign.
He has 16 caps for England but hasn’t represented the Three Lions since March 2023.
Chelsea go into the game against Leicester in third place in the Premier League table and are nine points behind leaders Liverpool.
