Damning new research has found which vehicles are the most likely and least likely to fail their MOT tests as motorists potentially face huge repair costs.

Following analysis of almost 210,000 MOT failure results with data from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), the diesel powertrain Peugeot 207 had the highest MOT fail rate at a staggering 4.71 per cent.

The petrol version of the Peugeot 207 placed in second with a score of 33.23 per cent, while the 206 model recorded a failure rate of 33.2 per cent.

Most of the issues relating to the diesel 207 were related to fractured or broken front coil springs and broken sidelights, while the petrol version was mst likely to fail for a loose exhaust pipe or a broken check engine light.

The Citroen DS3 also appeared on the top 10 list of cars with the highest fail rates in fourth and eighth place for the diesel and petrol versions respectively.

Only petrol and diesel models ranked among the worst MOT rates, with many of the most popular manufacturers ranking in the top 10 given their popularity on UK roads.

Two Volkswagen models also crack the top 10, with issues identified including low tyre treads that pose a blowout risk in the front wheels.

Commenting on the list, Alicia Hempsted, car insurance expert at MoneySuperMarket, said: “Your car failing its MOT can be a frustrating and costly experience, especially as it voids your car’s insurance.”

Analysis of more than 209 million MOT tests was conducted as part of the research

High-end vehicles including the Porsche 911, Audi Q2 and Q3, and both petrol and diesel versions of the Mercedes-Benz GLA score low MOT failure rates.

Ms Hempsted added: “By analysing over 209 million MOT fail results, we’ve created a unique car MOT Fail Checker tool that helps drivers spot where the weaknesses for their specific car make and model may be and act before they become a headache on MOT test day.

“Whether it’s worn tyres or faulty handbrakes, we hope our new MOT checker puts drivers in the best position to make an informed choice, save money and stay safe on the road.”
