BT has announced a deal to buy TalkTalk out of administration in a rescue move to save the telecoms group from collapse.
The agreement also includes TalkTalk’s wholesale business, PlatformX Communications.
BT said the rescue will protect services for 2.5 million customers, including 1.5 million retail customers and one million wholesale customers.
BT Group chief executive Allison Kirkby said: “Our immediate priority is to stabilise the business and provide a safety net for the households and businesses who rely on TalkTalk.”
The company said the takeover followed a lengthy but unsuccessful attempt to sell TalkTalk’s consumer and wholesale operations.
It warned that a collapse could have put vulnerable households and connections supporting emergency services and other essential public services at risk.
A regulatory review is expected over the coming weeks. BT and TalkTalk will continue to operate separately and compete while that process takes place.
TalkTalk generated around £1.2billion in revenue over the past 12 months but was loss-making, according to BT.
