Premature greying of hair can be triggered by various lifestyle and environmental factors, making some cases reversible.
Plastic Surgeon and CEO at Beauty by Experts Medical, Mariia Chabdaieva, warned that the breakdown of melanin, which gives hair its colour, is accelerated by stress, smoking and environmental pollution.
Nutritional deficiencies also play a significant role, particularly in vitamins B12, D, E, and minerals like zinc and iron.
These factors can lead to early whitening of hair, though in some cases may be manageable through lifestyle changes.

The potential for reversing grey hair depends largely on its underlying cause, pointed to the expert.
Chabdaieva explained: “If the cause is a modifiable one, such as nutritional deficiencies, stress, or some specific medical conditions like thyroid dysfunction leading to greying, their management may help in some restoration of natural pigmentation.”
The medical practitioner also recommended a balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and proteins is essential for maintaining natural hair colour for longer periods.
“Vitamin B12, folic acid, biotin, and antioxidants are highly essential for healthy pigmentation,” explained Chabdaieva.
Unfortunately, vitamin B12 deficiency is particularly common among those consuming low levels of animal-based proteins or experiencing absorption issues, so these individuals may need to take extra measures to maintain healthy levels.
When a nutritional deficiency is present, supplementation with vitamins B12, D, and biotin, combined with a proper diet, can help slow or reverse greying in some cases.
Stress management through meditation, yoga, or exercise may be beneficial, as oxidative stress affects melanin levels.
What’s more, some individuals may benefit from topical treatments containing catalase or peptide-based serums.

However, Chabdaieva cautioned that greying is largely irreversible when caused by genetics or age-related melanin reduction.
A holistic approach is key to addressing premature greying, combining multiple interventions for the best results.
“While no method can guarantee a full reversal process, the best results will come from a holistic approach that addresses nutrition, lifestyle, and overall scalp health,” said Chabdaieva.
Early intervention and comprehensive lifestyle changes offer the best chances of preserving hair colour.
