Over a hundred people have been killed as police conducted gang raids in Brazil just days before Prince William and Sir Keir Starmer are due to visit the country.

More than 40 dead bodies were laid out on a street after 132 people were killed, including four police officers, as 2,500 armed officers descended on Rio de Janeiro.

In the most high-profile police operation in the city’s recent history targeting a major gang, some 93 rifles and half a tonne of drugs were seized, authorities say.

The Prince of Wales is due to fly over to Rio de Janeiro next week to present awards during the Earthshot Prize ceremony.

Prince William is due to visit Rio de Janeiro just days after 132 people were killed.

Kensington Palace declined to comment when contacted by GB News.

William, alongside a prize council, will announce five winners for the Earthshot Prize, which awards innovative projects £1million each to combat critical environmental issues.

The Earthshot Prize “searches the world for environmental solutions that show the greatest potential”.

This year, Brazilian native Gisele Bundchen will serve on the prize council alongside national treasure Sir David Attenborough.

Prince William will travel to Rio de Janeiro next week.

CEO of the Earthshot Prize Jason Knauf said: “The partnership with the Eleven Eleven Foundation to transform Rio into the Earthshot City is more than a collaboration, it’s a call to urgent optimism, uniting bold climate leaders and communities to face a powerful opportunity to spark bold dialogues and real climate action.

“From London to Cape Town, the Earthshot Prize has spotlighted ambitious climate leaders. Now, it arrives in a country full of creativity and urgency, inviting us all to explore, be inspired, and act.”

The prince will head to the Cop30 summit in Belem, Brazil, following the event, on November 6.

William will be joined by Sir Keir at Cop30, as Mr Starmer looks to re-establish the UK as “a global leader for climate action and green growth”, according to the Prime Minister’s spokesman.

Officials emphasised that net zero represents “the economic opportunity of the 21st century” with potential to “create good jobs for the future”.

Sir Keir previously attended the Cop29 gathering in Baku, Azerbaijan last year.

The yearly Cop conferences unite countries that have signed the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change to coordinate responses to global warming.

Princess Kate will not be joining her husband at the Earthshot Prize ceremony, staying in Britain to support the family’s move from Adelaide Cottage to the nearby Forest Lodge in the coming weeks.

Princess Kate will not be joining Prince William in Brazil.

Kate previously attended the first two awards ceremonies for the Earthshot Prize, joining her husband for the event in London in 2021 and Boston in 2022.

She did not join William in 2023, as she stayed home to support Prince George, who had exams that week.

Kate also missed last year’s ceremony in South Africa, spending most of the year out of the public eye amid her cancer diagnosis and treatment.

It will be a stark upgrade for William, Kate and the three children, upgrading from the four-bedroom abode to the eight-bedroom home on the Windsor Great Park estate.

The couple reportedly sees Forest Lodge as their long-term home, planning to stay even when William accedes to the throne.
