Thousands of British shoppers face potential health risks after purchasing popular television and film-themed enamel mugs from high street retailers Boots and TK Maxx.

The affected products feature beloved characters from franchises including Harry Potter, Batman, Game of Thrones, Rick & Morty, South Park, SpongeBob, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Both retailers have issued urgent product recalls after discovering that harmful heavy metals could transfer from the mugs’ enamel coating into hot drinks.

The contamination poses significant health concerns, particularly for customers who have used these products regularly over extended periods.

Boots has withdrawn three Blue Sky Designs gift sets from sale after discovering contamination issues with the included mugs.

The affected items are the Game of Thrones Mug & Sock Set, Rick & Morty Mug & Keyring, and Batman Mug & Sock Set.

The pharmacy chain stated: “It is possible that heavy metals may migrate from the enamel coating into hot drinks, posing a health risk if ingested repeatedly over a long period of time.”

Customers have been instructed to stop using the mugs and return them to any Boots location for a full refund.

Meanwhile, TK Maxx has recalled four character-themed mugs that were sold in stores between May and September this year.

The affected products include designs featuring Harry Potter, South Park, SpongeBob, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, priced between £6.99 and £10.99.

The retailer confirmed that testing revealed the mugs’ coating could release heavy metal concentrations exceeding permitted safety thresholds.

TK Maxx warned that this poses a “potential health risk if used with food or beverages”.

The company has urged customers to “stop using [them] immediately” and return the items to any TK Maxx or Homesense branch.

Affected customers can obtain full refunds without proof of purchase.

For additional assistance, Blue Sky Designs can be reached on 0800 980 3901 or via [email protected].

TK Maxx customers requiring support should telephone 01923 473561 or email [email protected].

Both companies have emphasised the urgency of these recalls, with TK Maxx encouraging customers to “spread the news” amongst friends and family.

Anyone who purchased these mugs as gifts should notify recipients immediately to prevent continued exposure to potentially harmful substances.

It comes just days after Henry vacuum cleaners were urgently recalled due to a “serious” electric shock risk.

Safety alerts such as recalls and withdrawals must always be taken seriously to ensure your safety.

For the latest product safety alerts, consumers should consult the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS). For the latest food safety alerts, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) provides comprehensive, up-to-date guidance.

Alternatively, all major retailers have dedicated web pages where alerts are posted.
