As part of its first 2022 hardware event, Apple announced today that it is adding a fourth chip to its M1 lineup: the M1 Ultra.
The M1 Ultra serves as the most powerful system on a chip from the tech company. Based on what Apple has said about its new chip, the M1 Ultra is two M1 Max chips (the company’s previous flagship) combined. M1 Ultra includes up to 128GB of RAM and 20 CPU cores: 16 for performance and four high-efficiency, 64 GPU cores.

Apple claims that the M1 Ultra can deliver 90 percent higher multi-threaded performance than the latest PC desktop CPU, with GPU performance claimed to be faster as well while using 200W less power. However, these comparisons should always be taken with a grain of salt. To further tout how supposedly powerful its new system on a chip is, Apple says that the M1 Ultra can deliver eight times the performance of the M1.
The M1 Ultra will be available first on the Mac Studio, a new desktop also announced at today’s event that promises a lot of power for professionals and a big price tag.
