There are endless skin care products, supplements and tools that promise to help create youthful-looking skin, but where should you start?
While discussing skin care myths, a doctor explained the beauty advice that could be particularly beneficial.
Medical director of DVC Stem, Dr Louis A Cona, a leading stem cell therapy clinic, shared how your sleep can impact how old your skin looks. In fact, sleeping on your back could be the most beneficial position for slowing down the appearance of wrinkles.
This is because pressure on the skin – which happens when you sleep on your sides or stomach – can lead wrinkles to form more quickly over time, the doctor explained.

He said: “Changing sleep positions can help [slow down ageing]. Investing in silk pillowcases and maintaining a proper skin care routine are also effective measures to protect the skin during sleep.”
Another hack that could turn back the years on your appearance without skin care is changing what you eat.
According to Dr Cona, an antioxidant-rich diet can slow down ageing. These are thought to fight oxidative stress.
Aim for foods high in vitamins C and E and beta-carotene, among other antioxidants, the expert explained.
Diets high in antioxidants are said to combat oxidative stress, with foods rich in vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, and other antioxidants, often being promoted on social media for their anti-ageing benefits.
According to a stem cell expert, antioxidants do play a role in neutralising free radicals – unstable molecules that can harm cells. This suggests that a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains may help maintain healthy skin and potentially slow down visible signs of ageing.
However, the clinic’s medical director emphasized that nutrition is just one aspect of a broader strategy.
While a healthy diet is undoubtedly beneficial, it should be combined with consistent skin care, sun protection, and overall healthy habits for more effective, long-term results.

Indeed a study of Japanese women published in the National Library of Medicine found those who ate more green and yellow vegetables, which are high in antioxidants, had decreased facial wrinkling.
Furthermore, a cross-sectional study of Japanese women revealed that a higher intake of green and yellow vegetables, which are rich in antioxidants, was significantly associated with decreased facial wrinkling.
This comes as a skin care expert debunked more skin care myths. They suggested using more products is not likely to benefit your skin, as many people believe. Less is often more.
