Mr Mountbatten-Windsor’s legal difficulties extend well beyond this fraud trial. In February, he was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, an investigation which remains ongoing, with police raiding his properties as part of intensified scrutiny of his connections to the late Jeffrey Epstein.
However, a ruling last month determined that the search warrants authorising those raids were unlawful.
Mr Mountbatten-Windsor has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
Separately, Police Scotland have confirmed they are conducting “active inquiries” following reports linking Mr Mountbatten-Windsor and Epstein to Balmoral Castle, the Royal Family’s private estate in the Scottish Highlands.
In August, Mr Mountbatten-Windsor also provided a witness statement in a stalking case after alleging that a reportedly homeless man, Alex Jenkinson, had accosted him outside his Sandringham residence in May as he walked his dogs.
