- Indian cricket fan had a piece of sandpaper at Adelaide Test
- Once he waved it at Aussie supporters, escorted from venue
- ‘Sandpapergate’ in 2018 remains a dark day for Aussie supporters
An Indian cricket fan was escorted out of the Adelaide Oval Test after waving sandpaper at Aussie supporters.
While the cheeky gesture from the man – dressed in a white playing top – was generally well received, it didn’t stop two security guards kicking him out of the venue on day three of action.
The sandpaper scandal of 2018 in Cape Town, South Africa was a dark day for Australian sport.
Cameron Bancroft was caught on camera using sandpaper to illegally alter the shape of the ball – and chaos followed.
It later emerged he was coerced into doing so by David Warner, whose reputation was left in tatters.
Warner – and then captain Steve Smith – were later banned for 12 months by Cricket Australia (CA) for bringing the sport into disrepute, while Bancroft was sidelined for nine months.

The recent vision from Adelaide was shared on X – and has garnered almost 420,000 views in under 48 hours.
While the security guards didn’t see the funny side of the man’s gesture, many Aussie cricket fans did.
One supporter posted: ‘Indian fans should do this in Brisbane [during the third Test], will be fun.’
Another commented: ‘Peak cinema. In [the] next match, all Indian fans should bring sandpaper.’
A third weighed in with: ‘This guy deserves an award….Aussies [are] so soft.’
Meanwhile, Australian cricket legend Jeff Thomson has admitted he loved the confrontation between Travis Head and Mohammed Siraj in Adelaide.
Siraj gave Head a sending off following his dismissal in Australia’s first innings – and the local boy chirped back with gusto after scoring 140.

Both were later found guilty of breaching the International Cricket Council (ICC) code of conduct following their verbal spat.
Siraj was fined 20 per cent of his match fee and Head had a demerit point added to his record – but the pair are said to have reconciled their differences.
Thomson loved the theatre – and wouldn’t mind seeing some added tension across the rest of the Test series.
‘I would rather see that (showdown in Adelaide) than batsmen joking with bowlers which I’ve seen a few times this summer,’ Thomson said.
‘At least you know they are playing seriously. People who pay their money don’t want to see them being matey. They want it full on.’
